Rudy Movie Review by Eliza P p.1

This is a movie review on “Rudy”, (the movie we watched in PE) that I posted to rotten tomatoes.

“Rudy”, a movie with believe-in-yourself and don’t quit messages. A movie where a young boy defies the odds. A movie so sexist and stereotypical it makes me want to puke.

Where to begin? “Rudy” is a movie about white, catholic, sexist men playing football. Sounds great already, right? One of the best parts is the dark outlook on the friendly tutor, D-Bob. For anyone who hasn’t seen the movie, D-Bob is a Notre Dame graduate, and acting as a TA for one of Rudy’s teachers in Holy Cross. He promises to tutor Rudy, who couldn’t pay him because he was broke. Sounds great, right? It would be… if the backup payment wasn’t a girl. Rudy, I want to give you a quick lesson- THIS IS THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY! However sad it might make you, you can’t pay someone with a human being. Girls are not here for your usage, and you can’t trade them like cattle. So get a job.

But don’t worry, Rudy! You aren’t the only painfully sexist character in this film! Readers, why don’t I tell you about my favorite line? It comes at an emotional and climactic point, where the coaches are trying to pick people for their football team at Notre Dame. Then comes the memorable, girl-power line: “Alright, boys! This is where we sort the men FROM THE GIRLS!” Great job, coach. The producers are just crushing little girl’s dreams left and right, aren’t they? And people wonder why little children are often sexist. Of course they are, with garbage like this being fed through their media stream!

You may wonder why I watched this movie in the first place, if I hate it so much. Well, I didn’t have a choice. It’s been raining for the past few days where I live, so the Physical Education teachers had the “bright idea” to show this to our class. Great impression you’re making on the young minds of this generation, school board. I was utterly appalled that this kind of film would make its way into my school, which is supposed to be a safe place where you can learn to be whatever you want! However, the few female characters in this movie- the mother, the girlfriend (who they presented as a distraction from Rudy’s goal) and, of course, the payment for tutoring- prove otherwise. Apparently, that is all we can be. I would get started on the message this presents to boys- that they can use girls for their own benefit and can only fit in to the typical gender role for their sex- but then we would be here all day. Inspiring family movie? I think not.  You’ll notice I give this film zero stars.
